Walking into the newly launched JW Marriott Mumbai Sahar, little did we know of the gastronomic surprise that was in store for us. Here to sample the ‘Barbecue Buffet’ held on Saturday nights, we were blown away by the varied cuisines, flavours, desserts, all served with trademark JW Marriott hospitality.
The 24-hour coffee shop done up in serene beige was bustling with people, which was a bit surprising since the eatery has been operational only recently. The low dining tables had comfortable leather seating that was ideal for the culinary indulgence to follow. Live counters for Thai soup, Italian pasta, Indian Chaat, Arabic shawarma, Japanese sushi, waffles and of course, the barbecue – all vied for our attention.
Chef Rungtiwa, the sous chef – Thai, took us on a quick tour revealing that the key to the buffet was to eat everything but in small quantities. Without much ado, we were whisked away to the Thai noodle soup station to create our soups. Topped with prawns, chicken dumplings, and spinach noodles, the soup was light, fragrant and the perfect start to the night. We could not resist the crisp prawn crackers to munch on while drinking the soup. Soon, the sushi platter along with the prawn tempura arrived on our table with the pickled ginger, soy sauce and wasabi. Not much of sushi aficionados, we did love the cucumber cream cheese one and the salmon sushi while the prawn tempuras were hot and crunchy. Chicken, fish, lobsters, smoked duck, and lamb shanks were barbecued on our behest and served with sweet chilli sauce and tamarind sauce respectively. Smoked duck and lobsters came out tops. The veggies – paneer shasliks, pineapple slices, and baby corns were barbecued as well but being true blue carnivores, we were partial to the meats. Whilst sipping on the frozen cranberry Margarita, the conversation centred on what else but food!

Already feeling stuffed; we took a quick walk around the restaurant only to be enticed by the desserts on display. Gagandeep Singh Bedi, the Sous Chef, welcomed us back to the table with ‘Baluchi Raan’ (leg of lamb) that was extremely succulent and mildly spiced. Sharing the secret behind the tenderness, he explained that the raan was marinated for six hours and cooked on ‘dum’ (slow flame) for nearly two hours. Seeing our love for North Indian cuisine, he sent Dal Makhani (yummmmy and to die for!), Butter chicken, Nali nihari along with Amritsari kulchas to the table. A loud and clear consensus emerged amongst us that this was the best Dal Makhni we have ever eaten till date.
Desserts beckoned and we headed to the waffle station and pronto placed an order for one. We chose maple syrup, whipped cream, Madagascar dark chocolate and ice cream to go with the waffles that were simply divine. The ice cream and candy kiosk packed with regular flavours like vanilla, strawberry and banana, kulfi had a unique offering of olive and feta! Though we prefer this combo in our salads and pizza, we did try the ice cream and it was surprisingly good! Despite being stuffed, we didn’t have the heart to skip desserts. So calling for our cuppas of green tea to go with the bite size sampling of New York cheesecake, opera slice, white chocolate slab with dry fruits, salted caramel custard – we made an honest attempt to sample the most that we could. Not that it was too tough a task to fulfil!
